Text Box: LIBYA 2005 & 2006

In December 2004 I was invited by the British Council (Libya) to present my Odyssey Dramatic Presentation® ‘Saturn Lord of the Rings’ to several audiences in Tripoli, Libya as part of a programme to promote British Space Activities. In January 2005 these lectures were successfully presented and it was suggested that a special programme of events might be arranged to coincide with the March 29, 2006 Total Eclipse of the Sun which would cross Libya.

I was therefore invited by the British Council (Libya) to prepare a program of public events coupled with a scientific expedition. The Joint British Council-The Planetary Society expedition would encourage international co-operation, assist in cultural exchange, promote the use of the English language, educate and inform local people on the nature, the historical perspective of Total Solar Eclipses. The expedition was also to demonstrate and inform people on how to safely observe the Total Eclipse. The Planetary Society working with the British Council would form part of the Libyan National Solar Eclipse Public Awareness Campaign.

The scientific element of the expedition’s aim was to make serious scientific observations of the eclipse, the work of which should be freely available for discussion with scientists and students in Libya. Dr. Kenneth Phillips of the Mullard Space Laboratory in the UK was invited to lead the scientific element of the expedition with his project to observe the Solar Corona.
Text Box: The Libyan Eclipse project was a tremendous success a fine example of people from several organizations and countries working together to share in one of nature’s most wonderful spectacles.

Great credit goes to Ken Phillips and his scientific team from the Mullard Space Laboratory and the Wroclaw University, Poland for their excellent work in imaging the eclipse.
Text Box: An Odyssey Dramatic Presentation® entitled ‘ A Libyan Space Odyssey‘  tells the story of the expedition—an adventure worthy of Alan Quartermain himself!
